A team of scientists at the university of Iowa previously used a screening method to identify a compound in apple peel as a muscle enhancer. Using the same method, they found that tomatidine, a natural compound derived from cyan tomatoes, was more effective at strengthening muscles and preventing muscle atrophy.

Atrophy is caused by senescence, a variety of diseases and injuries including cancer, heart failure and orthopedic injuries. It causes weakness and fatigue, affects physical activity and quality of life, and causes falls and fractures. "Muscular dystrophy poses problems for patients, their families, and the healthcare system in general," said Dr. Christopher Adams, associate professor of internal medicine, molecular physiology, and biophysics at the university of Iowa. However, we lack an effective method to prevent or treat this disease. Exercise certainly helps, but for many people who are sick or injured, it's not enough or possible.
