Retinaldehyde (RAL), also known as vitamin A aldehyde, is a derivative of retinol oxidation, which is generated by the oxidation and fracture of β-carotene, which is reduced to obtain retinol and oxidized to obtain retinoic acid. Retinoic acid (tretinoin) has a very wide range of roles in skin diseases, but its clinical application is limited to a certain extent due to local irritation. Retinaldehyde is an intermediate metabolite of natural tretinoin and has similar biological activity to tretinoin, and it is significantly better tolerated by the skin than tretinoin.
