    Retinal, also known as vitamin A aldehyde,all trans Retinal,retinene, is an oxidized derivative of retinol, which is generated by oxidative cleavage of β-carotene, reduced to retinol, and retinoic acid by oxidation. Retinaldehyde is an intermediate metabolite of natural retinoic acid, has similar biological activity as retinoic acid, and the skin's tolerance to it is significantly better than retinoic acid.

    Function

    Retinaldehyde (RAL) has the characteristics of retinoic acid in the skin, and is better tolerated than retinoic acid. It directly interacts with protein receptors in cells, stimulates skin epidermis to accelerate renewal, increases the thickness of the stratum corneum, and makes the skin It is more compact and orderly; at the same time, it can accelerate the production of collagen in the dermis, prevent the destruction of collagen by UV, inhibit the increase of MMP caused by UV, and make the skin more elastic; the unique aldehyde structure is effective against Propionibacterium acnes, etc. Has a strong inhibitory effect and effectively improves acne-prone skin.

    Fig. 1.Changes in objective assessments after 12 weeks of application of RAL 0.05% and RAL 0.1% in patients with photoaged skin.Significant increases in hydration (A), reductions in the TEWL (B), and improvements in the fine wrinkle (C) and skin roughness (F) scores were evident in both groups, but the changes did not differ significantly between the groups. The brightness (L* value) improved to a similar extent in both groups (D). A significant improvement in the melanin index was evident only in the RAL 0.1% group (E) 

     

    Noted: Creams of both 0.1% and 0.05%RAL were well tolerated and improved skin moisture and texture. However, only 0.1 % of RAL cream could improve melanin index.
