Copovidone is a linear copolymer of N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) and vinyl acetate (VA), which is a water-soluble polymer resin. It is a white powder, odorless, tasteless, easy to absorb moisture, soluble in water, ethanol and anhydrous alcohols, and has good adhesion, hygroscopicity, film formation and surface activity.
Since copovidone is a copolymerization structure of NVP and VA, it has the properties of both PVP and PVAC. Compared with the properties of the above three products, copovidone retains the good water solubility, cohesiveness and film forming properties of PVP, and has relatively lower water absorption and broader solubility, better plasticity and stronger surface activity than PVP (note: affinity for hydrophobic surface is greater than PVP). Therefore, this product is an excellent tablet adhesive, and the tablets produced by it have the characteristics of high hardness and low brittleness, and can be less bonded under wet conditions, especially for the preparation and granulation of high dose, poor water solubility and water-sensitive drugs.

At the same time, this product is also an excellent film forming agent, used in tablets, particles, pellets and sugar-coated chip core coating solution and local drug spray. The film coating and spray film prepared with this product have good flexibility, low water absorption, high plasticity and low viscosity.

As a binder for tablets and granules, it can be completed by wet method, dry method or direct tablet method, and in most cases its dosage is 2-5% of the total preparation, generally about 3%, and the concentration of the adhesive is generally 5-10%. According to different substances and excipients, water or hexanol, isopropyl alcohol, etc., can be used as solvents respectively. When the direct tablet method is used, the amount is generally about 5%, can use lactose, sorbide, mannitol, microcrystalline cellulose and other excipient, but pay attention to control the moisture content of the ingredients to maintain proper adhesion.

As a film coating, it is often used in combination with cellulose derivatives, shellac and high molecular weight polyethylene glycol to improve the strength of the film and adjust the flexibility and solubility of the film. Under normal circumstances, it is not necessary to add ester plasticizers.
