Manganese sulfate (chemical formula MnSO4, formula quantity 151.00), its hydrate is a reddish rhombic crystal, the relative density is 3.50, the melting point is 700℃, soluble in water, insoluble in ethanol. It exists in a variety of hydrate forms. [1]

Manganese sulfate begins to decompose at 850℃. Due to different heating degrees, SO3, SO2 or oxygen can be released, and the residues include manganese dioxide or manganese tetroxide. When the crystalline hydrate of manganese sulfate is heated to 280℃, it can lose its crystal water and become anhydrous.

Manganese sulfate is a trace element needed for fatty acid synthesis crops, so it can be used as a fertilizer in the soil to increase production. Manganese sulfate added to animal feed, has the effect of fertilizer. Manganese sulfate is also the raw material and analytical reagent for preparing other manganese salts. Manganese sulfate is also used in industrial production of electrolytic manganese, dyes, paper making and ceramics.

The range of application is limited because of moisture. Manganese sulfate is nonflammable and irritating. Harmful by inhalation, ingestion or percutaneous absorption. Long-term inhalation of the dust, can cause chronic manganese poisoning, early neurasthenia syndrome and neurological dysfunction, the late occurrence of paralysis tremens syndrome. It is harmful to the environment and can cause pollution to the water body.

Anhydrous manganese sulfate is a near-white orthogonal crystal system, with a density of 3.25g/cm3 and a melting point of 700℃. It is easily soluble in water.

Manganese sulfate monohydrate is a light pink monoclinic crystal system with a density of 2.95g/mL (25℃), a melting point of 700℃, and a boiling point of 850℃. Unstable at normal temperature and pressure. Soluble in water, soluble in 5-10g/100 mL (21℃), insoluble in ethanol. When heated to more than 200℃, the crystallization water begins to be lost; when heated to 280℃, most of the crystallization water is lost; when heated to 700℃, it becomes anhydrous salt melt. When the temperature is 850℃, it starts to decompose. Due to different conditions, it releases sulfur trioxide, sulfur dioxide or oxygen, and the remaining black insoluble manganese tetrioxide is completely decomposed at 1150℃.
