Colorless acicular or lamellar crystals, softened at 277℃ and decomposed at 287℃. The solubility in water at 25℃ is 41.9g/L, slightly soluble in alcohol but insoluble in ether and chloroform. Sweet taste.

From pig and cow blood. Pig blood powder was prepared by spray drying, about 18kg for every 100kg of pig blood. L-histidine is commonly used as its hydrochloride ([7048-02-4]). The eluent containing l-histidine was concentrated until crystallization appeared, and the pH value was adjusted to 2.5 with hydrochloric acid while hot. Ethanol twice the solution amount was added immediately, and then it was allowed to stand, precipitate and filter to obtain the crude product of l-histidine hydrochloride, which was decolorized, recrystallized and dried. L-histidine can also be extracted from the hydrolyzed products of degreased soybeans.

It is an important component of amino acid infusion and compound amino acid preparation. It can be used to treat gastric ulcer. It's also used in biochemical research
