    What's in Yerba Mate herb?

Yerba mate, also known as Brazilian tea, Paraguay tea or simply as mate, is made from the leaves of the Ilex paraguariensis tree, which is native to South America. It is grown abundantly in Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay, the leading producers of yerba mate extract. Yerba mate extract contains stimulants and antioxidants that may help prevent and treat obesity and inflammatory diseases.

Yerba Mate herb has caffeoyl derivatives (caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, 3,4-dicaffeoylquinic acid, 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid and 4,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid) and flavonoids (quercetin, rutin and kaempferol).
Yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis) is used for the preparation of the most popular tea-like beverage of South America. Hypocholesteremic (lowering cholesterol), antioxidant, hepatoprotective (protecting the liver) and bitter taste properties of mate are attributed to the phenolic constituents of the leaves. Yerba mate tea is popular in Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and southern Brazil. In these countries, the tea is popularly known as mate or chimarr.

    Functions:

Yerba mate herb, just like many herbs, is a good source of antioxidants and certainly deserves a spot in one's kitchen next to other herbal teas. Drinking yerba mate tea a few times a month is a good option, or one could take yerba mate supplements. Yerba mate herb has vasodilating properties. Yerba mate is promoted for weight loss, but there are better herbs for this purpose. One excellent herbal combination for appetite suppression is Diet Rx.

Yerba mate extract is rich in antioxidants, due to its high concentration of polyphenols, compounds that provide health benefits beyond a plant's nutritional content. Yerba mate is comparable to red wine and superior to green tea in terms of antioxidant activity, according to researchers who published an article in "Chilean Journal of Agricultural Research" in 2009. Yerba mate may also help prevent weight gain, according to authors of study published in "Obesity" in 2009. In addition, it acts as an anti-inflammatory agent, potentially benefiting your heart and reducing inflammation associated with a wide array of ailments.

    Applications:

Taking high doses of yerba mate extract may increase your risk of some types of cancer, according to researchers who published a study in "Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention" in 2008. After measuring the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs, in eight brands of commercially marketed yerba mate, they found that the leaves contained extremely high concentrations of carcinogenic PAHs, posing an elevated risk for cancers of the esophagus, lung, oropharynx, larynx, kidneys and bladder. Consult your health care provider before taking yerba mate extract.
