What Is Decapeptide-12?
Decapeptide-12 is a new type of synthetic oligopeptide. Its peptide sequence contains 2 tyrosines, 2 arginines and 3 serines. These amino acids have a strong inhibitory effect on the activity of tyrosinase sex. Therefore it can inhibit the activity of tyrosinase, thereby effectively reducing the synthesis of melanin. According to studies by Anan Abu Ubeid and others, compared with hydroquinone, it has a stronger ability to inhibit intracellular tyrosinase and is not toxic.

What Are The Benefits?
Decapeptide-12 binds reversibly to tyrosinase, an enzyme found in many different pigment-producing cells. It prevents tyrosinase from catalyzing the oxidation of phenols, the first step in melanin production. In mammals, tyrosinase is found only in melanosomes, specialized compartments in pigment-producing cells. Tyrosinase is absent across species and, in fact, its structure can vary greatly even between closely related species. In humans, differences in the efficiency of tyrosinase, which determine skin color, are the result of a slight modification of the TYR gene found on chromosome 11.
A prospective animal study looked at the safety and efficacy of topical decapeptide-12 in photodamage and found it significantly reduced skin hyperpigmentation. In fact, nearly 40% of subjects in the study achieved baseline skin tone (100% reduction in pigmentation), and 15% moved from Grade 3 to Grade 1 photodamage. Those with the most photodamage (grade 4) experienced only moderate improvement to grade 3 after 12 weeks of use. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot study, 100% of melasma patients experienced a statistically significant change in skin color (photodamage).
Decapeptide-12 was approximately 17 times more effective in treating hyperpigmentation than previous treatments, including hydroquinone. Studies performed on melanocytes cultured for 7 days showed a reduction in melanin content of 27%, 6-43%. After numerous animal tests, it may eventually be incorporated into commercial products for the treatment of hyperpigmentation.
