This sterol is the most abundant of the four major human bile acids, from which glycocholic acid and taurocholic acid are derived. Bile salts (sodium salts of bile acids) secreted by the liver into the bile are powerful emulsifiers. They return to the liver and are reused, so bile salts always circulate between the liver and the small intestine. Bile salts are particularly important for absorption not only of fat but of all fat-soluble nutrients.
