Drugs for the respiratory system can be divided into three categories: Antiasthmatic drugs, Antitussives, and expectorants. Antiasthmatic drugs are to treat bronchial asthma and asthmatic bronchitis. Antitussives act on the central nervous system which is responsible for the cough reflex to suppress coughing. Expectorants dilute the sputum by promoting the secretion of the respiratory tract so that the patient can spit out the sputum.
