Although there is no structural similarity with retinol, has been found to have retinol function through retinoid regulation of gene expression. In 2018, a 12-week randomized, double-blind clinical study conducted on 44 volunteers showed that is equivalent to retinol in its ability to improve photoaging (wrinkles, hyperpigmentation), but has Better skin tolerance.

Compared with baseline, bakuchiol and retinol both significantly reduced the surface area of fine facial wrinkles. At the 12-week time point, a significant change in wrinkle surface area compared with baseline was found, but there was no significant difference between.

Evaluate pigmentation by facial analysis. The clinical classification showed that 59% of participants in the bakuchiol group had improved pigmentation in the 12th week, and 44% of the retinol group had improved pigmentation in the 12th week. Both can improve the degree and area of pigmentation. But there is no statistical difference in the efficacy.
