Baicalin is a flavonoid compound extracted and isolated from the dried roots of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi. It is a light yellow powder at room temperature and has a bitter taste. Difficult to dissolve in methanol, ethanol, acetone, slightly soluble in chloroform and nitrobenzene, almost insoluble in water, soluble in hot acetic acid. When encountering ferric chloride, it appears green, and when encountering lead acetate, it forms an orange precipitate. Dissolved in alkali and ammonia water, it initially appears yellow and soon turns black brown. It has significant biological activity, including antibacterial, diuretic, anti-inflammatory, cholesterol lowering, anti thrombotic, asthma relieving, fire clearing and detoxification, hemostasis, miscarriage control, anti allergic reactions, and antispasmodic effects. It also has the ability to regulate certain diseases and has strong physiological efficacy in anti-cancer reactions.
