A spokesperson for Johnson & Johnson says the company plans to file a biologics license application for its single-dose COVID-19 vaccine with the FDA "later in 2021," reported Fox News.
Meanwhile, Moderna announced in June that it had started a rolling admission process with the FDA for full approval of its COVID-19 vaccine for use in people aged 18 and older.
A Moderna spokesperson told Fox News that the company expects to complete the submission in August.
Both vaccines were previously granted emergency-use authorisations (EUAs) by the FDA and are already distributed in the US.
However, Pfizer and partner BioNTech's COVID-19 vaccine, now marketed in the US as Comirnaty, earlier this week became the first coronavirus vaccine to see its EUA converted to full FDA approval.
