Premature Ovarian Insufficiency Tied to Poor Sleep Quality

Women with premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) receiving hormone therapy have poor sleep quality, according to a study published online in Menopause.

Cristina Laguna Benetti-Pinto, M.D., Ph.D., from the University of Campinas in São Paulo and colleagues compared sleep quality and fatigue between 61 women with POI receiving hormone therapy and 61 age-matched women with preserved ovarian function.

The researchers found no differences between the groups in Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores. However, the POI group had worse scores for the sleep latency component and use of medication to sleep. Compared with the control group, the POI group also had a higher fatigue index, with sleep quality classified as poor in 69 percent of patients and fatigue present in 59 percent of patients.

"The results show that it is imperative to reinforce the need to discuss and evaluate sleep quality when treating women with POI," the authors write.
