Severe thunderstorms can damage property, knock over trees and cause flash flooding, says the U.S. National Weather Service. When severe weather strikes, acting quickly is key to staying safe.
During a severe thunderstorm, the weather service urges people to:
Stay updated with a local news station or NOAA Weather Radio.
Stay away from windows. Do not go to large open rooms.
Do not take shelter under a tree or within a shed.
Go to a secure location within your home, if possible.
Take your pets with you.
