The number of measles cases in the United States so far this year has reached 1,044 in 28 states, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says.
That number is the highest number of cases since 1992 and since the disease was declared eliminated in the United States in 2000. But outbreaks have occurred recently in areas of the United States with high concentrations of so-called "anti-vaxxers," who object to routine immunization.
States that have reported measles cases to the CDC are: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Mexico, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Tennessee, Virginia, and Washington.
The CDC update was issued Friday.
