Licences for manufacturers and wholesalers of medicines and ingredients

The public list of companies in the UK who have had their licence or registration to manufacture or wholesale medicines/ingredients revoked or suspended has been updated by the UK government’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency.

Anyone in the pharmaceutical or medicinal supply chain should use this list to ensure they are dealing with a valid licence or authorisation holder.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) may suspend a licence to wholesale or manufacture medicines and medical products if it:

identifies safety issues

needs to investigate a licence holder

In certain circumstances MHRA will permanently revoke a licence.

The list of suspensions and revocations is updated on the same day that the suspension or revocation takes place.

In the list of revoked manufacturing and wholesale distribution authorisations around 30 companies are present, including Birch and Beech Limited, Supamed Limited, Health care Equipment and Supplies Company Limited and Pharma Cure Health Care Limited.

The list of suspended manufacturing and wholesale distribution authorisations was also recently updated, with around 18 companies listed. Some of these are the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust, which is further suspended until the 30th August 2019, St Helens Millennium Centre Services Limited, which was suspended from the 5th October 2018, until the 4th April 2019, and Bristol Laboratories Limited which is further partially suspended until the 22nd February 2019, with the importation of all licensed products permitted at the company’s Luton site.

It is imperative that individuals and companies in the pharmaceutical or medicinal supply chain use the above lists to ensure that the people or companies they are dealing with hold a valid license, or are authorisation holders. 

The Eudra GMDP website can be used to identify lists of authorised manufacturers and wholesalers of medicines.
