Penn Medicine has launched its first European presence in London, in a move that aims to expand access to innovations pioneered by its physicians in the US to patients in the UK and Europe.
The initiative, the first of its kind for Penn, provides a path for patients in the UK and European Union to access their world-class experts and care through referrals and telemedicine, as well as opportunities for collaboration with UK medical schools.
Penn researchers already have a long-running partnership with leading UK experts to develop and implement quality measures to protect patient safety and brain health following surgery. Now, Penn Medicine will develop fresh opportunities for knowledge exchange and further relationships with UK physicians around emerging approaches in medicine.
"Penn Medicine has long been a global leader in patient care, innovation, and training, and we are pleased to extend that leadership with a physical presence in the UK," said Ralph Muller, chief executive of the University of Pennsylvania Health System.
"We have always been proud of our role in training the world, and this initiative advances that mission by opening new doors and forging new relationships both in the UK and across Europe."
As one of the world’s leading academic medical centres, Penn says it is dedicated to the missions of medical education, biomedical research, and excellence in patient care.
It is also home to many "firsts" which have paved the way for modern medicine across the globe, from the world’s first x-ray to discovery of the first gene linked to cancer and the development of the first chimeric antigen receptor T cell (CAR T) cancer therapy.
