Changchun Changsheng Life Sciences Ltd has been charged with a huge fine of $1.3 billion for falsifying production records in a scandal that prompted a nationwide crackdown on the vaccine industry.

Although no injuries were reported from use of Changsheng Life Science's rabies vaccines, authorities ordered a recall of its products from Chinese and foreign markets.

The pharma firm had used expired materials, mixed different batches of products and failed to test them properly. It was revealed that the company destroyed records to conceal its misconduct. 14 of its executives as well as its chairwoman were arrested while dozens were banned working in the drugs sector.
