UL absorbs U.K.-based medtech human factors firm

UL has acquired Medical Device Usability, a Cambridge, U.K.-based human factors firm that specializes in assisting manufacturers of devices, drug delivery products and in vitro diagnostics.

The deal adds to the safety science lab’s offerings in medical human factors while presenting inroads to customers in the U.K. and Europe. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Medical Device Usability’s portfolio includes user-needs research, interface design, product evaluation and preparation of related documentation and regulatory submissions. Its employees will join UL's existing advisory services division and human factors practice, doing business as Emergo by UL.

"Working as one, the combined entity will respond to the growing market need for human factors consulting services across the globe and build on UL's mission to make the world a safer place while helping companies create and protect their product's brand value," said Upayan SenGupta, VP and general manager of UL’s life and health sciences business.

Medical Device Usability and UL’s human factors engineering research and design staff will become a single team, based throughout the world in Chicago and Concord, Massachusetts, along with Tokyo and Utrecht, Netherlands.
