What is Carnosine?
L-Carnosine(beta-alanyl-L-histidine) is a dipeptide, a non-enzymatic free radical scavenger and a natural antioxidant.
Studies on Carnosine.
Many studies have found that n-acetyl carnosine is effective in the prevention and treatment of cataract. One of the studies shows that, Carnosine can improve cataract formation in rats caused by exposure to guanidine, While these claims support carnosine's ability to treat cataracts and other hypothetical benefits for the eye,But so far, there has been insufficient support from the mainstream medical community.
In a study, it points out that Carnosine can improve the relationship between autistic children and society and increase the vocabulary used by autistic children, but the improvements claimed in the study could also be due to maturation, placebo effects or other factors not reported in the study.
In animal studies, carnosinin supplementation has been shown to increase corticosterol levels, which may explain the hyperactivity symptoms sometimes associated with high doses of carnosinin. However, this study injected carnosinin into the ventricles of chickens, and the increase in corticosterol levels has not yet occurred in human studies.
In animal studies, carnosine has been shown to slow the growth of cancer cells and prevent alcohol-induced oxidative stress and ethanol-induced chronic liver damage. In mice, the neuroprotective mechanism of carnosine prevented permanent brain ischemia.
Carnosine is also considered a protectant because it increases the hayfric limit of human fibroblasts and the rate at which telomere shortening occurs, and maintenance of telomeres may be beneficial to the growth of some potential cancers.
It is generally believed that the typical vegetarian is deficient in carnosine, but it is not known whether this will cause adverse effects.
