There are three chemical isomers of tartaric acid, namely L (+) - tartaric acid (dextral), D (-) - tartaric acid (levo) and ESO - tartaric acid (racemic). The tartaric acid obtained by chemical synthesis is usually DL-tartaric acid (racemic) with 50% dextral and 50% levo-tartaric acid respectively. L(+) -tartaric acid is a natural configuration, also known as d-tartaric acid, which widely exists in many plants, such as grapes and tamarind fruits. D (-) - tartaric acid is also known as L - tartaric acid, which is found in the fruits and leaves of the goat's shoe nail. L(+)-tartaric acid and D(-)-tartaric acid can be obtained by conversion of Epoxysuccinic acid with different enzymes, or by chemical resolution of DL-tartaric acid.
