The PVP grade commonly used in the cosmetics industry is K-30. Commercially available PVP is a white free-flowing powder or solid in the form of aqueous solutions with mass fractions of 20%, 30%, 45% and 50%. PVP is soluble in water, has hygroscopicity, its equilibrium moisture absorption is about 1/3 of the relative humidity of the environment, similar to the hydration of proteins, each monomer is associated with 0.5mol of water. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is not prone to chemical reactions. When stored under normal conditions, dry PVP is very stable. The anti-mildew solution is also stable. When heated to 150 °C in air or mixed with ammonium persulfate and heated at 90 °C for 30min, PVP will be exchanged to form water-insoluble compounds. In the presence of azo compounds or oxidants such as dichromate Chemicalbook, light can turn the PVP solution into a gel. Precipitation occurs when the solution is coheated with a strong base such as sodium silicate or trisodium phosphate. Many different compounds can form complexes with PVP, such as PVP and iodine complexes are very stable, and have a good bactericidal effect, and can reduce its toxicity; The copolymer of polyacrylic acid, tannins or methyl vinyl ether and maleic acid is added to the aqueous solution of polyvinylpyrrolidone PVP, an insoluble complex is generated, these complexes are insoluble in water, alcohol and ketones, but the polyacid in it is neutralized with alkali, which can reverse the reaction; PVP complexes toxins, drugs and chemical drugs to reduce their toxicity; Some dyes can also be strongly complexed with PVP, which is the basis for polyvinylpyrrolidone PVP as a dye decolorizing agent. |

Polyethylpyrrolidone (polyvidone, povidone, or PVP) is a synthetic water-soluble polymer composed of linear 1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone groups. It is hygroscopic and easily absorbs up to 40% of its weight in water. It has excellent wettability in solution, easy to form film, suitable for use as coating additive. PVP can be synthesized by free radical polymerization of its monomer form N-vinylpyrrotanone using AIBN as initiator. In the chemical industry, PVP is widely used as a surface stabilizer, growth regulator, nanoparticle dispersant and reducing agent.
Application
PVP (average molecular weight) can be used as a stabilizer for the synthesis of metal nanoparticles to prevent their agglomeration. [4]PVP is also used to prepare mesoporous silicon polymer complexes (PVP-aminopropyl-SBA-15 Schiff base complexes) to effectively remove bivalent heavy metal cations from wastewater. PVP functionalized grafting has a strong affinity for heavy metal ions because it provides two adsorption sites, one through metal-C-O group interaction and the other through metal-π interaction (chelation with Schiff base).
The production process of PVP
The production process of PVP can be divided into acetylene method and gamma-butyrolactone method, and acetylene method is the mainstream production process of PVP. |
