1.Introduction
The yam extract is extracted and refined from the root of the yam. Its active ingredient is diosgenin, a white powder. The yam extract contains phytoestrogens, which has an estrogen-like effect, which keeps the estrogen level in the body at the best level, so as to achieve beauty and whitening, promote breast growth, relieve various discomforts during menopause and menstruation, and reduce blood lipids to prevent cardiovascular, Anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective effects.
2.Plant source
Yam (scientific name: Dioscorea oppositifolia L.) is a plant of the genus Dioscoreaceae in the Dioscoreaceae family, twining herbaceous vines. The tubers are cylindrical and grow vertically. The stems are usually purplish red, right-handed, and glabrous. Simple leaves, alternate on the lower part of the stem, opposite above the middle. The male inflorescence is a spike-like inflorescence, 2-8 cm long, nearly erect, with 2-8 inserted in the leaf axils. The capsule is not reflexed; the seed is born in the middle of the axis of each chamber. Flowering from June to September, fruiting from July to November. Used as medicine, it can replenish the loss of the spleen and stomach, cure qi deficiency and weakness, indigestion, nocturnal emission, enuresis, and unknown swelling and poison.

4.Function
1. Hypoglycemic effect
Yam mucus and polysaccharides can stimulate and regulate the body's immune system, lower blood sugar, and enhance the body's resistance. Research results show that yam has a certain anti-diabetic effect, which may be related to increasing insulin secretion and improving the function of damaged pancreatic β-cells.
2. Anti-aging and anti-oxidant effects
Studies have found that there is a certain correlation between the anti-free radical activity of yam and the content of polyphenolic components in the extract. The study also found that yam saponin has a strong ability to scavenge hydroxyl free radicals: it has a strong Fe3+ reduction ability, and the reduction ability increases with the increase of the concentration, but it is not as good as the reduction ability of the same concentration of vitamin C.
3. The role of Immunomodulation
The immunomodulatory effect of yam extract is mainly related to polysaccharides.
4. Regulate the function of the spleen and stomach
Yam has the effect of invigorating the middle and replenishing qi, and has the effect of regulating the function of the spleen and stomach. Research by Shen Jingen et al. found that the anti-ulcer effect of fresh yam extract may be related to improving the quality of the mucus layer and increasing the serum EGF content.
5. Anti-tumor and anti-mutation effects
It is proved that the anti-mutagenic effect of active polysaccharide of yam is mainly achieved by inhibiting the mutagenic effect of the mutant on the strain.
6. Lipid-lowering effect
Feeding atherosclerotic mice with purified starch of yam can reduce the lipid concentration. For mice fed with free cholesterol and cholesterol-containing food, yam can reduce the cholesterol concentration.
