Astaxanthin is used as a feed supplement for salmon, crabs, shrimp, chickens and egg production. Regardless of the source, astaxanthin provides some important benefits beyond coloration. It also has been found to be essential for proper growth and survival.
For seafood and animals
The primary use of synthetic astaxanthin today is as an animal feed additive to impart coloration, including farm-raised salmon and egg yolks.
For humans
The primary use for humans is as a food supplement. Research shows that, due to astaxanthin's potent antioxidant activity, it is beneficial in cardiovascular, immune, inflammatory and neurodegenerative diseases. Some research supports the assumption that it may protect body tissues from oxidative and ultraviolet damage.
Health benefits of Astaxanthin:
* Muscle and Joint Health. Studies cited by the Linus Paul Institute give strong clinical evidence that Astaxanthin reduces inflammation, one of the causes of muscle and joint pain . In addition, a 2003 Korean study demonstrated the value of Astaxanthin in muscle recovery by its ability to block nitrous oxide in muscles, thus preventing the inflammation and soreness in muscles that people experience after intense workouts.
* Skin Health. A study conducted in Ireland in 1998 demonstrated that Astaxanthin prevents skin damage caused by ultraviolet light including premature aging and skin cancer. The anti-oxidant properties of Astaxanthin also seem to serve as a natural sunscreen preventing sunburn and the potential cancer-causing effects of free radicals in the body.
*Potential Anti-Carcinogen and Anti-Aging Agent. A Japanese study in 2003 confirmed earlier research that showed Astaxanthin has significant anti-oxidant effects in the body. These anti-oxidant properties help muscles recovery after exercise, may reduce the risk of certain types of cancer, as well as reduce the effects of aging.
* May Help Prevent Diabetes. The risk of Type II diabetes has increased significantly during the past decade. Two studies demonstrate that Astaxanthin reduces the glucose sensitivity of cells, thus reducing the risk of Type II diabetes.
* Supports Immune System Function. The body’s immune system helps protect it from the bacteria and viruses that cause infections and illnesses. Research shows that Astaxanthin elicits immune responses to these pathogens in the body that can cause infection.
